Mississippi Bluff Country
One of the most beautiful stretches of the mighty
Mississippi flows along the border of southeastern
Minnesota. Part of the Great River Road Scenic Byway,
the scenic drive on Highway 61 between LaCrescent and
Red Wing has terrific river views and charming river
towns tucked beneath soaring bluffs. It’s also part of the
Great River Birding Trail, with excellent opportunities for
bird watching, from songbirds to tundra swans and eagles.
In the autumn, the Mississippi River valley is known for
its beautiful fall color and numerous apple orchards.
LaCrescent, at the I- 90 entrance to southeast
Minnesota, is apple country. It’s the starting point for
19-mile Apple Blossom Drive, which winds over back
roads through orchards and farmfields on the bluffs high
above the Mississippi River. At Great River Bluffs State Park,
overlooks feature panoramic views of the river valley.
Hikers and birders especially enjoy this blufftop park.
